When the Top Five was announced I was very disappointed for Katie, but much moreso for Andrea and Jillian, since this was their last year of eligibility. Either one would have done an outstanding job as Miss Ohio and given the chance, could have done much for the program, but it just wasn't meant to be. Any one of the Top Five would have done an excellent job too, but I will admit that I thought it would be between Kasey and Becky. They both performed so very well all week, and both have such presence onstage, not to take anything away from Karissa. I had the pleasure of judging her once and I'm sure she'll do a great job.

I really had mixed feelings Saturday about not attending that evening, but I felt my job had been done, and with the Coronation Ball following the crowning, I wouldn't have been able to see the girls anyway. So instead I had two of my favorite formers over, Maynan and Lexi. I didn't start getting nervous until right before Top Ten was announced. I was thrilled for Jillian since she'd taken so much heat on the voyboards and Andrea, since she felt she had something to prove. No, she wasn't a fluke. You both showed the naysayers! I was ecstatic for Katie since this was her first trip to Miss Ohio. All of the excitment was tinged with a little sadness, as Amy had worked so hard to get there and do well, and although she didn't make the cut, my sadness was quickly replaced with pride in how well she had represented herself. Especially considering that she didn't have much other help. Each girl did her absolute best, and I couldn't have hoped for more for them. I felt in my heart that one of them would become Miss Ohio, but some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.

I had many really great conversations with each of the girls over the course of the competition week. Some were filled with anticipation and laughter, some with apprehension, some with tears of joy, and some with tears of pain. It was definitely a roller-coaster ride but nonetheless, it was coming to a close and the day we had all been working for was finally upon us. I truly believed that it was going to be a good night heading into Finals and I was at peace. Whatever the outcome, none of them left anything to regret, they left it all on that stage and there was nothing else they could do but perform to their personal best and let the chips fall where they may. Important Lesson #1 in pageants: Judging is subjective.

Tonight's talent winner, Jenna Wilson did a nice job with her rendition of "I Am Changing". Manda had been asked fill in for her backstage person who was unfortunately delayed, and she made the most of the advice given. She really worked it out and performed her ass off! I've had the chance to speak with Jenna a few times over the years and she's just a delight to be around. She really does have a great platform story and is one of those contestants who works and works and works her platform, March of Dimes.

Friday night preliminary swimsuit winner, Kasey Wilson was completely fierce in her black velvet Jayme Shaw two-piece. It was a perfect choice and I've never seen her in better shape, ever. It was a most deserved award and I wasn't at all surprised that she was another double preliminary winner.

Tonight was Katie's night to shine elegantly onstage in the Evening Gown competition. I'm really happy with Katie's gown. Sherri Hill has some beautiful designs and this one is just such a great choice for her. She had a hard time choosing between a couple of colors and either would have been great, but I'm glad she chose to go with the red. Katie couldn't have done a better job. She looked amazing and just floated across the stage. Woohoo!

I was really anticipating talent tonight. I knew that both Andrea and Jillian knew their respective routines/songs, but the wait is always nervewracking. Andrea was up first and I knew if she came out and hit the first phrase well, she'd do great. And she did. I think it was probably the best she's ever performed "I want more" and I couldn't have been happier. She was really able to work her dress and choreography better so the visual was very pleasing and I felt she'd done exactly what she needed to do to get the job done. Jillian decided to go with her standby, "Drums", although she did change many of the moves from the original dance. Her new costume looked incredible and those 40 gross of stones shimmered and shined like crazy. She hit every mark and I really felt that she would get that opportunity to perform it again Saturday night.

The swimsuit competition followed and I knew Amy was a little nervous, but she's never looked better and I felt she was going to score well. We had Salwa re-do the blue detailing so it was secure and take it in a little and boy am I glad we did. Her suit fit perfectly and she had me convinced! She worked what the good Lord gave her and I couldn't have been more proud.

Katie got to finish up the night in OSQ. She came out looking stupendous in her Calvin Klein dress we found online, and got exactly the question we had anticipated. We had the chance to talk earlier in the day and come up with a couple little pearls to use and outstandingly enough, was able to use one of them to finish out her question. It was like butta! What a way to end the week! I felt like it really went out on a high note and I was convinced that the girls would be competing on Saturday night. Totally satisfying.

Miss Lake Erie, Kasey Wilson performed the opera aria "Chi il bel songo di Doretta", which just happened to be the aria that my dear friend Leslie sang to win her very first local title, Miss Greater Cleveland. I've always loved the song, and Kasey did a great job with it. I especially liked her choice of talent gown, which was one I had suggested earlier in the year to a friend as an evening gown possibility for Ohio USA. If I remember correctly, it also came in an ice blue tafetta. It really suited her and made the most of her long torso and height. Stunning!

Karissa did a great job again tonight and as a result is a double preliminary winner. I really liked her choice to change her swimsuit. It was a much more fun and updated choice and I loved the color. Glad to see that she's chosen to spray tan too. Very nice job!

Preliminary night two began with the 3rd flight competing in Evening Gown. Once again, Andrea and Jillian would be competing and wearing their stunning dresses. They both chose to wear the same gowns they wore last year, which I believe was wise. Wardrobes aren't cheap and as the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Neither was "broke" by any means.

Talent followed with the second flight performing. Amy chose to sing "Summertime", the Fantasia Barrino version. She looked so awesome and she did a great job. The picture of her to the left captures Amy's beauty and ease onstage and it's one of my favorites of the night.

First flight competed in Swimsuit, and Katie looked like she was having such a blast! She worked it out and did her thing, and I was hoping she'd pulled out the prelim award, but I'll bet she was a very close second. Karissa looked great and deserved the win.

I was so pleased and amazed to watch these young women and realize how much they've grown through their years competing. It really is remarkable the effect this program can have on many contestants. It is the definition of what the MAO and MOSP is about. It's the journey, not necessarily the destination, and the growth and maturity one develops is invaluable.

Miss Clayland Karissa Martin performed "The Girl in 14G" originally sung most famously by Kristen Chenowith of "Wicked" fame. I really thought she did a great job with it and it suited her voice and vocal style quite well, in my opinion. She was entertaining, and looked great. It wasn't very surprising when she won the talent preliminary award. I was a little surprised to hear, though that the monetary amount for winning the preliminaries has gone down this year. In previous years, talent prelim netted a contestant $750 and swimsuit was $500. This year the winners are receiving $700 and $450, respectively. I know that $50 may not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but it is just another indicator of the effect that the economy and lack of creativity in marketing is doing.

The competition began with Evening Gown and it was Amy's first onstage competition. I have to admit that I got pretty choked up watching her realizing her dreams onstage. I could see her visually taking it all in and it was so special! Amy chose this silver sequined one shoulder gown by Tony Bowls because she really felt like it reflected her personality and the fit was beautiful too. It absolutely glittered on stage and she looked so elegant! Thanks go out to Madison House for locating the gown and to Salwa for the quick alterations.

Next in the lineup of events was Talent and Katie's introduction to state level competition. Blisters and asthma attack during practice aside, Katie came out and rocked it! She chose an urban style song called "Street Sounds", hence the more casual looking talent costume. Katie felt very strongly that it should look like she just started dancing as she was walking down the street. I think she did an amazing job!

The next competition of the evening was Swimsuit, which was extremely competitive and especially exciting for me, since both Andrea and Jillian competed one after the other. The new Miss America style walk was displayed remarkably well by several of the contestants. I was a bit nervous for everyone about the stairs, but

they all navigated them like pros. Andrea and Jillian were definite standouts, along with Nanciann Strosnider and Jenna Wilson. The flight was deep with "lookers" and it could have gone several ways.

The final competition of the evening was On Stage Question. All the contestants were asked a platform related question, and most did well. Nerves got the best of a few, but Amy did great and I was proud of the fact she was able to correlate the flooding that's been happening in the Midwest to her platform, Habitat for Humanity. I think it gave the audience (and judges) a sense of why her platform is relevent now. Most of the flight wore suits, so no real "out of the box" styles were seen. I will be interested to see if that continues to be the trend.

This year, I've decided to stay at home a few of the nights. As many of you who watched the webcast last night, we missed contestant introductions, which is really when the excitement starts building. I was a bit disappointed, but quickly got over it when the broadcast finally began and I got a glimpse of the end of the opening production number and saw how great everyone looked. Wow, it is gonna be a great competition!

Last Sunday turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day and the girls looked even more fabulous than I expected. The Miss Ohio Parade is a long-standing tradition and the contestants look forward to the chance to wave to the crowd and represent their communities. It's a great time and the funnel cakes aren't bad either.

Check in day at Miss Ohio was less than stellar due to the massive thunderstorm that entered the area right before introductions at the Miss Ohio Festival. In true Miss Ohio spirit, the girls didn't let it stop them from thanking the Mansfield public for opening up their city and welcoming them with such hospitality. It was cold and it was went but it was even more exciting for me considering that this is Amy's and Katie's first appearances at the state level. I'm so very proud of how hard they all worked to get there! It will be an intensely competitive week, but these girls are prepared and ready to take it on. Go on girls!

Andrea Andrysick had the unique opportunity as Miss Greater Cleveland to be an honored guest during Cleveland Fashion Week, and this year was even more special, considering that they also brought in Miss America, Kirstin Haglund. What a day! I know it had to be an exhilirating and draining day all in one. You see, Andrea also took part in her college commencement, only to hurry home and don an evening gown and her crown and get right back out on the road. She really does exemplify the dedication and organization it takes to be a great titleholder, and she does this still maintaining a great sense of humor and grace under pressure. I'm very proud of her and the exceptional woman she has become.

Kirstin was very gracious and even remarked that their conversation was very similar to one she'd had with Lauren Nelson the year before. Most importantly, she reiterrated to Andrea that the job of Miss America is exactly that-a job, first and foremost. Kirstin was very candid with her thoughts and advice and I think it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get the scoop straight from Miss America.

There really is an exceptional group of ladies going to Miss Ohio this year, and any one of them would do a great job at the top spot. Do I think there are some that may not be truly prepared for what the job of Miss Ohio entails? Absolutely. Do I think some are better equipped to handle it than others? Definitely. It takes an independent minded, mature young woman to juggle all the balls you'll have in the air, while still trying to be gracious, thoughtful, and selfless. I am so fortunate to have had the chance to get to know some of these wonderful young women and have them become a part of our extended family. What wonderful role models for my own daughter. She really has reaped the benefits of having so many strong, active role models throughout her life because of the Miss Ohio program. For that, I'm very thankful. To whomever will become Miss Ohio, remember it goes by very quickly, and it can be arduous at times, but it will fly by in a second, so take the time to take pictures and enjoy what it can bring to your life. And my last bit of advice would be to learn the fine art of compromise and knowing when to pick your battles. It will lead to a lot less heartburn. ;-)

Anyone who knows me well, knows I'm a HUGE America's Next Top Model fan. This year, I have been pulling for Whitney from the very beginning. She not only embodies beauty, but more importantly, a confidence that is lacking in many fuller-figured women. I was ecstatic when she pulled off the big win, and I think it is sending an extremely important message to young women about body image and acceptance. Noone can deny that this girl is hot! Could the MAO be as accepting of a girl like Whitney? Time will tell, but my hope is that this event will be the catalyst for the change that is necessary to stop the madness of crazy dieting and ridiculous amounts of exercise that some of these young ladies partake in to become what's considered "attractive", by pageant standards.

Jilly's been working towards getting back to Miss Ohio and this year, Miss Central is her ticket. For those of you who may not know, Easter weekend is a pretty lucky draw for Jill. You see, the first title she ever held (Hilary and I had the honor of being her first EDs), Miss Buckeye State was also held over the Easter holiday that year. She had also had her share of frustration that year, but she overcame and channeled it positively and worked hard. After winning the last local pageant of the year, she made Top Ten and was competing on Finals night for the title, much to the chagrin of many titleholders who had previously beaten her during the competition season.....never underestimate your competition.

Tomorrow night, March 22nd, ONN will be showing the Miss Ohio USA pageant at 8:00 p.m. I'm really excited that ONN has chosen to embrace both the USA and America systems and we now have an outlet to showcase many of Ohio's outstanding young women. I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday evening than watching a pageant in my jammies, with a glass of wine and all the commentary I feel like making without offending anyone other than my family. Yeah!!

Much ado has been made recently of titleholders and their political opinions or support for certain candidates. Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I am a hard and fast Democrat with many opinions myself about politics and the world we now live in. As an advisor to a few of these outspoken young women (some who also happen to be outspoken bloggers), I have to say I am very proud of the fact that they aren't afraid to speak their minds and they can support their viewpoints with substance, even if I don't personally agree with what they say or how they feel. It definitely makes for spirited discussions, and pretty amazing prep. What my point is, is that you don't have to have a brain transplant to win Miss Local, Miss State or Miss America. Judges, EDs and board members may tell you that you should steer clear of certain subjects if they're controversial or if your answers are controversial. Don't do it. Stay true to you, no matter what others tell you to do, say, or think. You do have a brain and it didn't come from some wizard behind the curtain.

One of the biggest reasons I find myself disinterested in the Miss Ohio organization is because of what it's become. The blood is in the water, and the feeding frenzy won't quit.

Unfortunately, I still believe in what the program can be, and that sucks. I couldn't put it in eloquent terms, since I don't feel the situation warrents it. These "discussion" boards have become an anonymous outlet for cowardly attacks, ridiculous accusations, and just downright nasty behavior. I'm so over it.

Until serious change happens, the vileness will continue and the lessons learned will not be about one's inner self, but how to win at all costs. This is not the Miss America I know and love.

Turning 40 and one day

Yesterday was a pretty tough day for me. Turning 40 meant a time of reflecting on what I've accomplished, what I've become, and what I have still left to do. It's a very honest reflection to say that I haven't done anything without passion, I've loved what life has provided me, and if I really assess my life by the love of my family, and loyalty of my friends, so far, it's been pretty damn good! So here's to no more tears about lost years, and to the blessing of a new day everyday. On to 40 and two days...

I went to my mailbox yesterday, and received my invite to Mel's upcoming bridal shower, and I figured I would blog about the engagement. To say it was exciting just doesn't do it any justice. Matt made sure that we knew it would be a very important night, and Bryan and I were both thrilled to be there amongst the family to witness this most wonderful moment. I know they're going to be a very happy, and loving couple, and will have a great life! Love you guys!

We had such a great time and it was so great to see these two finally get hitched (after 7 years together!) To say I love these guys is an understatement. My third Miss America experience

Unfortunately, I didn't get pictures for the final night of competition. I got to see Mel right afterwards, as I was her backstage person, and helped her gather her things up in the tent behind the theater. It was pretty cool seeing behind the curtain, so to speak. Most of the girls honestly seemed relieved to be packing up and going home. Mel and I had the chance to share a special moment and tell each other how great it was to have experienced this together. Mel is like a lil sis/daughter to me, and it just felt right to be the one to pick her up, dust her off, and send her on her way again. She came home and rightly became the best Miss Ohio she possibly could be. It all seemed to come full circle. The year before when we came to Vegas to watch Marlia compete she said to me that she was going to be the one on that stage the next year. She believed it through and through and there we were. It was one of the greatest feelings to know that she had a chance to live out her dream.

Allie and I had been talking about our chances of running into our favorite Project Runway diva, Kayne and thought that we might just get lucky. Well, wouldn't you know it. After Night Three visitation, who should I run in to, but the one and only Kayne Gillespie! I squealed in delight and screamed for Allie. Needless to say, we were both just giddy. Kayne was wonderful and we've now become friends. He even designed Jilly Bean's Miss Ohio gown last year. I love him!

Night three of Miss A was unbelievable. Mel looked so beautiful in SS & EG, and we were all so proud of her. We heard from many other states' folks and they thought she should have won ss. It was a great night and the Vegas atmosphere just made it that much more exciting.

Shelly and I had a great time during the day after rehearsals, just shopping and meeting people. We had a chance to visit with many of the Outstanding State Teens and got a shot with our own Ohio's Outstanding Teen Kelsey Bellew. She's a great girl, and I'm really hoping that she continues in the system. She will make a great Miss Ohio someday!

It was so exciting to see Mel living out her dream, and competing on Night One of Preliminary competition. She was happy and excited and it was great to be there and share in her experience. I will never forget the talks we had and tears we shared as we worked to have her at her very best. And she was. Judging standards are subjective, and that goes with the territory. I am proud of the woman she has become through her experiences as Miss Ohio and in pursuing her dream to become Miss America.

I've come to realize that I am a bad blogger. I have so much to say, but no time to say it. I guess I'll just have to make more of an effort to FIND the time. Well, it's been awhile since my last post (oddly enough I feel as if I'm in the confessional at church). The rocks in my head got loose and have been wreaking havoc on me. The official diagnosis is benign positional vertigo and let me tell ya, it ain't fun. Think of your worst drunk/hangover combo with no end in sight. Yeah, good times. NO!! Unfortunately, it has included a couple of hospital visits and mucho drugs to finally come to this conclusion. Many thanks to the docs of Ohio Head and Neck Surgeons for bringing me back to the land of the living yesterday. My treatments won't be done until next week, but at least I can finally walk, speak, and watch tv without feeling like I am going to lose my cookies. Today has been the first day that I can look at the computer enough to actually post, and so here I am. I'm ba-aack!

Mel has been asked by the Marines to represent Toys For Tots as their spokesperson, and she is doing such a great job. They've also joined her in promoting her platform of volunteerism by supporting her coloring book project and distributing them with the children's gifts this year. She is a great Miss Ohio and I'm so proud of her. The legacy she is leaving is truly far-reaching and meaningful. It's an exciting time!

I have been an Amazing Race fan since it began, secretly hoping that someday I might be one of those lucky contestants. Well this season's race has held even more excitment since one of my very favorite girls in the pageant world is racing. I met Kandace a few years ago through a mutual friend and just loved her. I really hope that she and Dustin win. Either would have made a great Miss America. Actually, K was my fave to win last year's contest, but I guess the judges just didn't see what the rest of America has. That's just fine, I'm sure this gig will more than make up for it. It's gonna pay off in spades. Keep kickin their asses girls!

There are many different types and each needs something different and unique to help it grow to be a prize winning flower.

Each has a beauty all it's own. Colors, fragrance, petals-each equally important to that particular bloom.

Many beautiful flowers grow wild, and some with little attendance will grow nicely also. Some need shade, while others need full sun and some need much water, while others need virtually none, but all strive to grow.

The ones tended by the gardener, though, with care and love for each individual blossom and it's own place in the garden are the ones that flourish the most.

Amy's Fitness USA Top 20

Amy was Top 20 at Ms. Fitness USA in Las Vegas!! I'm so excited and proud that she did so well at her very first national competition. Amy is a former Bengals cheerleader, and only began competing in fitness competitions this year.
